The MCP servers worth installing first if you're setting up Claude Code for real engineering work.

If you're setting up Claude Code on a real project, a handful of MCP servers cover most of what you'll need on day one: filesystem access (usually already available), a GitHub server for issues and PRs, and a Slack server if your team lives there.

For data work, add a Postgres server scoped to read-only access. For anything requiring web research, a search-backed server like Brave Search fills the gap. Start narrow, an agent with fewer, well-scoped tools is easier to trust than one with access to everything.
